WakeUp Carolina began with a promise after the fatal overdose of 19-year-old Mount Pleasant teenager, Creighton Shipman. Creighton’s family vowed that no person and no family would ever have to walk this walk alone. Since his passing in 2016, WakeUp Carolina has carried that promise forward—providing education, raising awareness, and offering HOPE in recovery through support groups, resources, and community partnerships. Today, the organization hosts 10 weekly support groups in both its Mount Pleasant and Berkeley County offices.

WakeUp Carolina gives wings to the belief that our community deserves a safe place to come together, heal, and recover—together. Born from grassroots efforts, the organization built its capacity before ever raising a dime and has since developed programs and services that never existed before. Its model has become recognized not only locally, but across South Carolina and even nationally, as a gold standard in the nonprofit space.
