Description
John Wright was raised by a village – the Old Mt. Pleasant Village, that is. He believes that this “village” has been instrumental in the development of his character and ideals and created a foundation that has motivated his business career, educational and personal aspirations. In 1972 his family moved to Remley’s Point. He attended Wando High School and Central Texas College. He served for 23 years in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer retired Master Sergeant, He lived in Germany for 8 years and was deployed to Kuwait for Desert Storm and Bosnia. John is on the Board of Childhood Food Solutions, volunteered at Patriot’s Point, and a Prince Hall Mason. He founded the Wright walk to raise awareness of childhood obesity, childhood hunger and lack of nutrition. One of his community awareness events was to walk from Moultrie Middle School to the State House in Columbia in 4 days. He has earned several awards including Honoree of the Men of Action Black History, Presidential award for Excellence in Education, Men of Action’s Trailblazer award.
John was instrumental in getting 8600 signatures while coming up 600 signature short of getting question on ballot to change the Town of Mt Pleasant current form of government, unsuccessfully run for Town Council in 2016 also ran for Mt Pleasant Waterworks Commission in 2021.
He ran a business, Club Buffs, in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Gullah Bar in Mt. Pleasant, SC. In his “down” time, John likes to figure out how to do things he doesn’t already know how to do and he puts up the BEST Christmas light display in his neighborhood. During his military career, he received numerous awards and accolades. Wright Walk Foundation also organized annual Christmas block party in the Old Village given out 100’s of toys and bikes. Wright Walking Club started in 2012. John staged a water drive in 2016 in the Old Village collecting and personally delivered over 40,000 gallons of water to the families in Flint, Michigan was profiled in the People magazine digital on line addition and received the Jefferson Award. John served on the Charleston County Historic Preservation Commission. His vision started the first Black History month program on Boone Hall Plantation. He is also the host of The J Wright Show on WJNI 106.3 on Sunday mornings at 9am.
