Books, coffee and wine — oh my!
Spirits were high at The Archive bookstore's June 3 ribbon-cutting ceremony, as Town officials and Chamber of Commerce members officially rang in the go-to venue for fans of dark academia.
Defined as a subculture of higher education, literature and the arts, Archive's collection of dark academia editions feature fantasy science fiction, thrillers, horror, classics, historical fiction, romance, banned books and retellings.
"I think all businesses are unique, but this one is a combination of all my favorite things, and it seems like there's a lot of other people who feel that way as well," said shop owner Amanda Badeau, who opened The Archive two months ago.
The vast beverage collection at the sip, sit and read hideaway offers a full-service package of Counter Culture coffee varieties, along with a selection of French, Italian and California wines, curated by a local sommelier.
The classic library shelves, book displays and assortment of coffee tables create a warm, inviting vibe that makes The Archive ideal for book club meetings, date nights or small private parties.
During a recent private gathering, said Badeau, guests were treated to drinks, as well as food, courtesy of next-door neighbor Cramer's Kitchen.
"When people come in the door, I just want them to feel a sense of welcomeness. When they come here, I want them to know that whoever they are, they are welcome here and we support them in whatever they need," added the married mother of one.
Seeing the same familiar faces sit down and stay awhile is proof positive that The Archive has been well-received as a literary venue with the power to transport patrons to another dimension.
Starting a new business from scratch has been a labor of love for Badeau whose vision for an extraordinary gathering spot has quickly become reality.
She further observed that visitors who frequent The Archive are shopping local and strengthening the town's economy as a result.
"This is my livelihood; this is my passion. I put everything into it, every growth resource I have, not just money, but time and energy instead of being with my son at home. So, when you come here and support us, it means a lot."
The Archive is located at 700 S. Shelmore Blvd. in Mount Pleasant. For more information, visit thearchivechs.com.
